Detail from a new work in progress. I've always loved color and pattern, and layers of visual texture. When I was in college it was layers of both physical and visual texture in the form of fabric paintings created with manipulated surfaces and stitching, drawing and painting. It was also college that finally opened some doors into the creative freedom available through a looser, more responsive drawing practice, focused on observation and rapid response over the tight rendering I was so used to. Drawing is one of those foundational practices, and some of my earliest memories area of drawing, but somewhere along the way I became so attached to the outcome that the forest disappears amongst the trees... So learning to let go of control was truly creatively liberating and transformative. What I've pursued within painting has been a similar process of breaking down attachment and allowing the intuitive response to take the lead, then building upon that. It's like a dance, between years of skill building that allow things like rendering to become unconscious and the subconscious impulse that whispers joyful responses to a new direction, or a new way to break down barriers between drawing and painting, for instance. Is drawing defined by the use of a traditional hand tool (in which case, what about digital?) And does it remains drawing if, for instance, the charcoal is then manipulated by a brush... #studiothoughts #contemporarydrawing #contemporarypainting #creativeevolutions

My living room this morning. When I want to play with new ideas or techniques sometimes I work them out in smaller pieces... Then I enjoy hanging them in a "salon style" presentation, all grouped together. Two of these pieces are actually already owned and simply being kept for the collector for the time being, until she has the space ready for them. The table you see in the first image is by @roundwoodfurniture ❤️. The dogs are most excellent companions.
The Silver leaf elk was an experiment in metal leaf patterning which has decided for now to remain a simple little piece; metal leaf patterning continues evolving on various ways throughout my work, as seen in the small "seed of life" bear in this post and the previously posted "Carnivale"moose painting... And the little wolf was just done last night in the studio. A bit more directly representational, with only a bit of background showing through... Welcome to a window into my process, as hung on my wall. Several layers in and several more to go, with some of the highlight and linear elements coming into definition, this piece is entering the "intuitive end zone"...
